How to Unlock Scholar & Undertaker in Nightreign — Full Quest Chain

FAQ

Do I have to beat the Dreglord to unlock Scholar and Undertaker?
No — the unlock chain ends at a scripted Dreglord story encounter that you only need to survive/trigger. The real Dreglord expedition is a separate unlock gated behind the Balancers.
What is the fastest order to unlock the new Nightfarers?
Beat Tricephalos (Gladius) once, return to Roundtable Hold for the Iron Menial scene, talk through the Small Jar Bazaar NPCs, then let the scripted Dreglord sequence play — both Nightfarers join afterward.
Why aren't Scholar and Undertaker appearing for me?
Check three things: the DLC is purchased/installed (update 1.03+), you've completed a Tricephalos expedition since installing, and you've fully exhausted the Small Jar Bazaar dialogue after the Iron Menial event.

The Forsaken Hollows’ two new Nightfarers — Scholar and Undertaker — don’t come with purchase alone: they join through a short scripted questline. Here’s the whole chain, in order.

Step 1 — Beat Tricephalos

Finish a Tricephalos expedition (Gladius, the three-headed wolf — the launch roster’s starter Nightlord). Any prior clear counts if you’ve already done it; fresh players just need one normal Gladius run to open the chain.

Step 2 — The Iron Menial event at Roundtable

Back at Roundtable Hold, an Iron Menial triggers a story beat — a quiet scripted scene that opens the next step. It’s a cutscene, not a fight; just let it play.

Step 3 — Small Jar Bazaar

The Iron Menial points you to the Small Jar Bazaar — talk through the new NPC dialogue there in full. This conversation is what actually flags the characters for arrival.

Step 4 — The scripted Dreglord encounter

The dialogue chain funnels into a scripted Dreglord encounter — a story-mode run-in with the DLC’s final boss. You don’t have to win — surviving the sequence is the gate. Afterward, Scholar and Undertaker join the Nightfarer roster.

What do the new Nightfarers play like?

  • Scholar — the knowledge/ailment archetype: his kit rewards studying enemies and layering statuses (Scarlet Rot pressure is his signature), with support-flavored arts.
  • Undertaker — a frontline executioner: melee-forward, strong against single targets, built for players who want the new boss fights up close.

What unlocks next?

The Nightfarers are the first half of the DLC chain — the two new Nightlord expeditions sit on a second track: beat any two launch Nightlords to open Balancers, then clear it once to open the Dreglord expedition.
