Messmer the Impaler Boss Guide — Shadow Keep Strategy & Phases
Messmer the Impaler guide: Shadow Keep location, the two NPC summon signs, slash and frostbite weaknesses, and how Base Serpent flips his Holy resistance.
FAQ
Is Messmer an optional boss?
Where are Messmer's NPC summon signs?
What is Messmer weak to?
What is the reward for beating Messmer?
Messmer the Impaler is Shadow of the Erdtree’s centerpiece boss — Marika’s hidden son, sealed in the Realm of Shadow to purge the hornsent, and the mandatory mid-DLC wall: you need his Kindling to reach the finale at Enir-Ilim. He waits in the Shadow Keep’s Specimen Storehouse, past the Dark Chamber Entrance Site of Grace.
Can I summon help for Messmer?
Yes — and the game hides two NPC helpers inside the arena itself:
- Hornsent — summon sign on the right. Appears only if you advanced his questline into the Shadow Keep (and didn’t side with Leda against him).
- Swordhand of Night Jolán — sign on the left. Appears if you rang a bell at the Finger Ruins for Count Ymir’s line; gone after Metyr.
The signs are mutually exclusive — picking one despawns the other — and crucially, they do not raise Messmer’s HP, making them pure upside. Spirit ashes and co-op players are also allowed.
Phase 1 — the Impaler
- 38,981 HP, spear-and-fire combat: long thrust strings, flame-imbued lunges, and the leaping Messmer’s Orb fireball punish.
- Slash damage goes through completely — 0% slash negation, rare for an armored boss. Frostbite is his lowest ailment threshold (316): katana-frost and bleed-frost hybrids shine.
- He disengages fast — after his strings he leaps away and re-enters. Fight patiently at close range; his biggest punish windows come after the orb and the flaming spear lunge.
- Poise 120, parryable (3 parries per stance break) — a build around parry-riposte works if your reads are clean.
Phase 2 — Base Serpent Messmer
At ~50% HP a cutscene fires: he rips out Marika’s seal and the Abyssal Serpent comes out to play.
- New serpent-transformation attacks — triple bite chains, the serpent fireball slam, and a Spear Fire Barrage aerial string that ends in an explosive slam.
- His Holy negation collapses to 0% in this phase — a deliberate lore-driven weakness (the sealed serpent bares itself). If you banked a Holy weapon or incantations, phase two is where they pay.
- The serpent moves are big but readable — dodge into the bite strings, not away, and punish the recovery after his triple-bite slam.
What strategy beats him fastest?
- Slash weapons first — his Slash negation is 0% while everything else physical sits at 20%. Katanas and curved greatswords shine; a Frost-infused slash weapon doubles up on his lowest ailment threshold.
- Patience between strings — Messmer’s kit rewards waiting out his combos and punishing the recovery; heavy attacks build toward a stance break (120 poise) for a critical.
- Bank Holy for phase two — his P2 Holy collapse means a Sacred-affinity sidearm or Holy incantation converts the serpent phase into a damage race.
What do I get for beating him?
400,000 runes, the Remembrance of the Impaler (tradeable for his greatspear or the Messmer’s Orb incantation), and Messmer’s Kindling — which burns the Sealing Tree and opens the road to Promised Consort Radahn at Enir-Ilim. For where Messmer sits in the wider run, see the progression route; for a build that exploits his bleed-friendly thresholds, the best bleed build.
