Malenia Boss Guide — Waterfowl Dance, Phases & Weaknesses
Malenia boss guide: dodging Waterfowl Dance, her heal-on-hit passive, phase HP totals, and why fire and frostbite are the efficient picks in Elphael.

What is Malenia weak to?
Is Malenia an optional boss?
Malenia is the fight Elden Ring is famous for — an optional remembrance boss at the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, and for many players the hardest wall in the base game. Two health bars, a heal-on-hit passive, and the move everyone learns to fear: Waterfowl Dance.
What makes Malenia so hard?
Two mechanics stack on top of an already-fast boss:
- She heals on every hit — even when you block. Her lifesteal passive triggers on any successful attack connecting with you, blocked or not. Passive play literally feeds her health bar.
- Waterfowl Dance — the aerial multi-flurry that deletes full health bars. Point-blank it is nearly unreactable; the counterplay is spacing discipline.
How do I survive Waterfowl Dance?
The reliable method when she leaps near you:
- Unlock and sprint directly away the instant she rises — the first flurry has limited tracking distance.
- Roll through the second and third bursts back toward her — dodging into the flurry, not away.
- If you carry a 100%-physical shield, block the first flurry as a panic option — you will survive but she gets healed.
At mid-range, locked-on circle strafing beats panic rolling: keep moving perpendicular and the flurries whiff wide.
Phase 1 — Malenia, Blade of Miquella
- HP 18,473. Aggressive but rhythmical katana strings; her slow walk-up is the pressure test.
- Watch for the lunge-grab — she steps back, hand cocked. Cancelable with burst damage during wind-up, or dodge sideways.
- Poise is low (80) — heavy attacks and jump attacks stagger her often; she is parryable, but needs three parries for the riposte window.
Phase 2 — Malenia, Goddess of Rot
- A fresh 14,778 HP bar. The fight opens with Scarlet Aeonia — the dive-bomb bloom you punish by sprinting under her arc, not away from it.
- New rot-clone dive and rot projectiles; she inflicts Scarlet Rot on hit. Boluses and rot-resist gear pay off here.
- She is more aggressive but less durable — this phase is a damage race. Stay aggressive; retreating feeds her heal passive the same as P1.
What do I get for beating her?
480,000 runes, the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess (tradeable at Roundtable for her katana, Hand of Malenia, or the Scarlet Aeonia incantation), and Malenia’s Great Rune — restored at the Isolated Divine Tower, it adds a rally-on-hit effect that turns aggression into healing: fitting, given the fight.
Millicent’s questline ends at this arena — her story is Malenia’s story (guide in progress). For the climb to Elphael itself, see the progression route, for a build that procs her fastest thresholds the best bleed build, and for how her Great Rune fits the finale, the endings guide.
